Axion House, Lewisham - Full Scaffold & Hoist Access
Overview
Archis Hoist Solutions was appointed to support the delivery of a large-scale residential development at Axion House, Lewisham, working alongside our parent company, Archis Scaffolding Solutions.
Located adjacent to two major mainlines into London Bridge, this project required close collaboration with both the client and Network Rail. Through early engagement and planning, we helped overcome access and design challenges to ensure the construction programme could begin without delay.
For the hoist operations on site, we installed two Alimak 650 FC 2-ton construction hoists to serve Blocks B and C. The hoists were delivered and installed in advance of the scaffold, enabling key areas to be preloaded and maintaining efficient access and logistics throughout the build.
Our in-house planning, installation, and maintenance teams ensured seamless coordination across all vertical access needs—keeping the project moving safely, efficiently, and in line with programme milestones.
Scope of Work
- 2 x Alimak 650 FC hoists (2-ton capacity) installed to serve Block B and Block C
- Hoists delivered ahead of scaffold to enable early access and loading
- Phased hoist installation in 3 stages, aligned with construction sequencing
- Close coordination with Network Rail for safe installation near live rail lines
- Preloaded access to upper levels minimising ground-level congestion
- Full scaffold wrap-around with protective Monarflex sheeting
- Joint operations with Archis Scaffolding Solutions delivering integrated access
Special Design Considerations
Given the site’s proximity to two active railway lines, significant planning and design input was required to ensure safe hoist positioning and scaffold clearance. This involved close liaison with Network Rail and early design validation to meet strict compliance and safety conditions.
The hoist towers were installed in advance of scaffold erection to maintain clear access routes and enable materials to be hoisted directly to working levels. This approach optimised site logistics and preserved valuable ground space.
Challenges Overcome
- Navigated planning approvals for construction within a Network Rail-controlled area
- Delivered staged hoist installations aligned with phased build programme
- Managed material flow and site logistics through preloading strategies
- Provided seamless coordination between hoist and scaffold operations
- Maintained access and programme despite high-density constraints and elevation complexity
